Why Healthy Eating is the Key to Healthy Teeth

We all know that brushing daily with toothpaste and flossing are essential to maintaining healthy teeth. And we’re all taught that a balanced diet is the trick to a healthy body. They’re two of the main things we learn about health and hygiene as children. But do you know that diet and nutrition can have a huge effect on your dental health as well?

The key to healthy teeth is in eating a variety of nutrient rich foods, across all food groups. Maintaining a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, protein, whole grains and calcium, provides the body with the essential nutrients needed for good oral health. 

While balance is important, however, there are 3 main foods that you should focus on for optimum oral health; 

  • Calcium rich foods, for strong teeth and bones – low fat milk, yoghurt, cheese, soy, tofu, salmon, almonds and dark leafy greens. 
  • Phosphorus, for healthy teeth – eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy, nuts and beans. 
  • Vitamin C, for healthy gums – citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, potatoes and spinach. 

It isn’t just your main meals that contribute to good oral health, you should think about how you snack during the day too. The more you eat, the more you introduce acid attacks on your teeth, so try to snack wisely and less often. Pass on sugary treats for fruit and vegetables, and when you can, brush after snacking to reduce the risk of cavities.

When it comes to oral health, you should consider your diet as important as brushing and flossing your teeth.
