Excessive sweating can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable condition, but now there is a solution – and you can even get the treatment at your dentist’s surgery!
For years, if you suffered from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis to give the condition its technical name, you just had to put up with it – and spend a lot of money on – antiperspirant. The most common type of hyperhidrosis occurs on specific patches on the body, often the areas that sweat most anyway, such as the armpits, feet, hands and face. People who suffer from this condition can find themselves sweating in the affected areas as if they’ve just run a marathon, when they’re sitting quietly in the office.
As you can imagine, this isn’t just uncomfortable but can also be really embarrassing, forcing sufferers to avoid social situations and intimacy. Some people may even be too embarrassed to seek help from a medical professional, believing that there’s nothing that can be done; actually there are lots of different treatments that a doctor may recommend, but one of the simplest is now available at the dental surgery.
Botulinum toxin, or Botox as it is more commonly known, can be used to treat hyperhidrosis, although doctors will not usually prescribe it on the NHS until other methods have been tried and found to be unsuccessful. A private clinic is the best way to go about getting this treatment for your excessive sweating, if you are determined to do something about the condition and claim back your social life.
The Botox is administered into the affected area through a small needle which can be numbed with an anaesthetic cream, if you are worried about the pain. Each affected area will need to be injected about 12 times, with the procedure taking less than an hour; so you could be back at your desk, sweat-free, come the end of your lunch break. While Botox is normally used to smooth out wrinkles and provide non-surgical face lifts, in this case the toxin blocks the signals from the brain to the sweat glands, reducing, but not stopping completely, the amount of sweat your body produces.
After all, a little sweat is essential for us to regulate our body temperature, so no sweat would lead to worse medical conditions than hyperhidrosis!
If you suffer from excessive sweating and have struggled to find an effective treatment, talk to your dentist in the Brentford area to see if Botox would work for you.
