Braces – without the train tracks

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way in recent years, with lots of companies now
boasting pain-free treatment, with invisible braces.

In the bad old days, braces were huge metallic affairs that were painful to have tightened, cut the inside of your mouth and left ugly cement stains behind even when they were removed. It was worth all the hard work to have a nice, straight smile but wouldn’t it be great if there were braces out there that did the same job without all that pain and humiliation?

Invisalign braces are one of the many new orthodontic treatments that promise just that. They have so many benefits over the old “train-track” style metal braces that it’s difficult to keep track of them all! Invisalign are almost invisible, as they are made out of clear plastic rather than metal. This also makes them more comfortable as there are no sharp or rough edges in your mouth. You can even remove Invisalign braces when eating or brushing your teeth to keep your oral hygiene up to scratch during treatment. Some people have even been known to take out their braces for social events, but you shouldn’t do this too often or it will affect your treatment plan.

Unlike metal braces, which had to be tightened in regular and painful appointments at the orthodontist, the Invisalign system uses a series of plastic aligners, with each one replaced by the newer, tighter model when needed. This treatment is even quicker than the old school braces, taking on average just 9-18 months for the procedure to be completed, though this depends on how crooked your teeth are to begin with and how closely you follow the instructions about wearing the aligners.

These Invisalign braces can work on most of the common problems that have been treated by braces for decades, such as crooked or overcrowded teeth, gaps, overbite and under bite. They are proving particularly popular with teenagers, who are usually mortified to hear that they need braces, though adults who have noticed problems deteriorating as they grow older are also choosing Invisalign as they are less intrusive in the workplace and in their own social life. Obviously, they are more expensive than the regular metal braces, but you’re getting a lot for that extra money – plus the treatment as a whole doesn’t take as long, so you can save yourself time and money on appointments.
